東京クラシック馬主クラブは、都心では体験できない、非日常的な森での時間や馬とふれあう心地よい環境を提供しています。愛馬と過ごすクラブライフを満喫している、Epicureのオーナー大石様にお話しを伺いました。

The Tokyo Classic Horse Owners Club offers a unique experience unavailable in the city—time spent in a tranquil forest and a relaxing environment where members can connect with horses. We spoke with Ms. Oishi, owner of Epicure, who enjoys a fulfilling club life with his beloved horse.

--乗馬を始めたきっかけを教えてください

学生時代から乗馬への憧れがあり興味もあったのですが、20代に腰を痛めたり、仕事が忙しかったりとタイミングを逃していました。親しい友人が乗馬を始めたと聞き、自分のための時間をつくろうと一念発起して乗馬クラブに体験に行ったのがきっかけです。

— What inspired you to start horseback riding?

I had always admired horseback riding since my student days and was genuinely interested in it. However, in my twenties, I injured my back, and work became increasingly busy, so I kept missing the right opportunity. When I heard that a close friend had started riding, I decided it was time to make space for myself. That motivated me to visit a riding club for a trial lesson, which became the starting point of my journey.

--愛馬との出会いを教えてください

乗馬を始めてまもなく、競走馬の馬主をしている知人から、「引退を考えている馬がいるので、会ってみませんか」とお声がけいただきました。まだ右も左もわからない素人でしたが会いに行くと、想像以上に素晴らしい子だったので、譲り受けることを決めました。

— How did you meet Epicure?

Not long after I started horseback riding, an acquaintance who owns racehorses told me, “There is a horse that may soon retire—would you like to meet him?” Although I was still a complete beginner who knew very little, I went to see him. He turned out to be far more wonderful than I had imagined, and I immediately decided to welcome him as my own.

引退競走馬が人とゆったりと過ごしたり、コミュニケーションをとれるようになったりするには再調教（リトレーニング）が必要です。預託先を探しましたが、私は乗馬を始めたばかりで、Epicureもこれからリトレーニングを始めるところだったため、ほとんどの乗馬クラブから難色を示されました。

Retired racehorses require retraining so they can relax around people and learn to communicate comfortably with them. I searched for a boarding facility, but because I had only just begun horseback riding and Epicure was also just about to start his retraining, most riding clubs were reluctant to accept us.

そんな折に、Epicureを譲ってくれた知人から「東京クラシック馬主クラブ」を知り、見学に行ったところ素晴らしい施設で「ここだ！」と思いました。事情を説明すると、スタッフの三成さんが、「入会をお待ちしております」と快く受け入れてくださいました。

Around that time, the acquaintance who had given me Epicure told me about the Tokyo Classic Horse Owners Club. When I went to visit, I found the facilities to be exceptional and immediately thought, “This is the place.” After explaining my situation, Mr. Minari from the staff warmly welcomed us, saying, “We look forward to having you join us.”

その後1年をかけて岡山の「NPO法人サラブリトレーニング・ジャパン」で、Epicureはリトレーニングに、私は引退競走馬とのコミュニケーションの仕方や技術トレーニングに励みました。また、そこで初めて、引退後に多くのサラブレッドが殺処分をされる現実を知り、1頭でも多くの引退競走馬をセカンドキャリアへ繋ぎ、馬と人が共生できる社会を目指す活動に興味を持ちました。

Over the following year, Epicure underwent retraining at the NPO Thoroughbred Training Japan in Okayama, while I devoted myself to learning how to communicate with retired racehorses and developing the necessary handling skills. It was there that I first learned the difficult reality that many Thoroughbreds are euthanized after retirement. This experience sparked my interest in supporting efforts to help as many retired racehorses as possible transition into a second career and in promoting a society where horses and people can coexist.

--東京クラシック馬主クラブへの入会時期はいつですか

2023年６月です。それ以来、クラブの活動を通して乗馬仲間の縁が広がっているのを感じています。

— When did you join the Tokyo Classic Horse Owners Club?

I joined in June 2023. Since then, I’ve felt my circle of riding companions steadily expanding through the Club’s activities.

--馬主クラブのお気に入りポイントはどこですか

語り切れないくらいたくさんあります。一番は馬にとっても、メンバーにとっても自由を許容してくれる心地良い場所であることです。ゆったりと自然を体験できる豊かな環境で、その日のコンディション、天候、気分によってどのように過ごすかを重んじてくれます。他の乗馬クラブでは施設に入らせてもらえないことが多い愛犬のアンも温かく受け入れていただけるので、一緒にかけまわって楽しんでいます。馬も、犬も、人も、自然に戻れる場所です。

— What do you like most about the Horse Owners Club?

There are so many things that I could never list them all. Above all, it is a place that offers a sense of freedom—both for the horses and for the members. The Club provides a rich natural environment where you can spend time at your own pace, with respect given to your condition, the weather, and your mood on any given day.

My dog, Un, who is often not allowed inside facilities at other riding clubs, is warmly welcomed here as well. We enjoy running around together in the open space. It is a place where horses, dogs, and people alike can return to nature.

--ゴルフも同時に楽しまれていますか？

アメリカで過ごした中学、高校時代は毎日のようにゴルフをしていましたが、日本ではゴルフ文化が少し窮屈に思えて距離をおいていました。東京クラシッククラブでの過ごし方は馬主クラブが中心ですが、素晴らしいコースが近くにありますし、友人からのお誘いもあるので、近いうちにコースデビューをしたいと思います。

— Do you enjoy golf as well?

During my junior high and high school years in the United States, I played golf almost every day. However, after returning to Japan, I felt that the golf culture here was a bit restrictive, so I gradually distanced myself from the sport.

At Tokyo Classic Club, I mainly spend my time at the Horse Owners Club, but since there is a wonderful course nearby and friends often invite me to play, I hope to make my return to the course in the near future.

--どのようにカントリークラブライフを楽しんでいますか

普段は都会で生活をしているので、収穫祭に参加したり、お味噌づくりをしたりと、自然の恵みを美味しくいただき、カントリークラブならではの豊かさを満喫しています。できるだけ自然の環境に戻していこうという精神に共感しますし、純粋にみなさんとの時間が楽しいですね。多くの友人をクラブにお誘いして、Epicureとふれあってもらったり、スタッフ付き添いで乗馬体験をしてもらったり、カントリークラブライフ仲間を増やしています。

— How do you enjoy your country club life?

Since I normally live in the city, I truly appreciate the richness of experiences unique to a country club—such as taking part in the harvest festival or making miso, and enjoying the gifts of nature in delicious ways. I resonate deeply with the Club’s philosophy of staying close to nature, and I simply enjoy spending time with everyone here.

I often invite friends to the Club so they can meet Epicure, enjoy horseback riding with staff support, and experience this lifestyle for themselves. Little by little, I’m expanding my circle of friends who share and enjoy the country club life.

Ms. Yuki Oishi is involved in education and global human resource development, focusing on personalized English lessons and study-abroad coordination. Through her connection with horses, she became interested in Equine Assisted Learning, an approach gaining attention in Europe and the United States that promotes self-awareness and personal growth through interactions with horses. Through Horse Education, the program she founded, she is working to introduce these initiatives to universities, companies, and other institutions.
